The founding of AWS

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a subsidiary of Amazon that provides on-demand and pay-as-you-go cloud computing services. Before AWS, setting up servers and computing infrastructure was time-consuming, expensive, and required forecasting how many servers an organization would need in the future.

Andy Jassy, CEO of AWS, spoke about the limits Amazon encountered before founding AWS in March 2006:

"I was working for Jeff [Bezos] in his chief of staff role, and we had this idea to explore a business where we built infrastructure technology services that together comprised a platform that allowed other companies to build their technology applications on top of it. We felt like we were moving slower in our consumer business in delivering software than we wanted. Amazon is a very strong technology company. We figure that if we had this problem, probably lots of other companies do too,” said Jassy.
