WiFi Frequency Bands

Circulated: July 6, 2020

What is the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless frequencies? The primary differences are the range (coverage) and bandwidth (speed) that the bands provide.

2.4 GHz band

  • Provides coverage at a longer range; better at penetrating solid objects
  • Uploads and downloads data at slower speeds (max is ~150 Mbps)
  • Use this if your device moves around your home a lot (i.e., smartphone)
  • Frequency used by microwaves, garage door openers, and baby monitors which can cause interference in your WiFi

5 GHz band

  • Provides better coverage at shorter range
  • Uploads and downloads data at faster speeds (max is ~1 Gbps)
  • Use this if your device is located near your WiFi router
