Organic vs paid search results on Amazon

Amazon no longer uses its algorithms to provide the best search results. Now only 4 of the first 20 (20%) results a shopper sees on Amazon.com are organic.

Only a few purchases happen beyond the first page, so sellers are paying for their products to be featured on the front page.

In 2018 Amazon began turning more of its page real estate into advertising. This change, along with increasing the number of ads and introducing editorial content, helped create a $31B per year advertising business for Amazon.

Other retailers such as Walmart, Etsy, and DoorDash are following suit building their own advertising businesses in a similar fashion.
