Tips for Managing a Remote Team

1:1 calls

• Have weekly or bi-weekly 1:1 (one on one) calls with employees for 30 minutes to check in with the person, not the work.

• Topics: Feedback first, then strategic, then tactical. Many managers make the mistake of doing this the other direction.

• Always have an agenda, but keep it light. This is the exception to the rule of running tight meetings.

Communicate publicly

• Avoid direct messages (e.g., Slack). Having discussions in public channels to make yourself more accessible and visible. Set the example for others to do the same.

• Document things yourself. Don’t delegate all documentation.
