“I would advise a startup company to be as narrow and as focused as possible. If you look at the original Amazon business plan, there is no hint of anything other than books…  

Soon after, we launched music and video, which worked way better than we thought it would. To figure out what customers wanted us to offer next, I sent an email to about 1,000 customers.

Besides books, music, and video, what else would you like Amazon to sell? 

The list that came back was incredibly long-tailed. I remember that one customer asked us to sell windshield wipers for their car! I can assure you that was not in the business plan.”
