Lead with context, not control

When Netflix executives wrote a PowerPoint deck about the organization’s management strategies, the document went viral—with over 20 million views since being published in 2009. It’s main focus is: give employees autonomy.

Managers provide the context to make informed decisions and employees are empowered with the flexibility to do the job the way they believe will work best. “High performance people will do better work if they understand the context.”

Netflix’s five-word spending policy sums it up: “Act in Netflix’s best interests.”

Leadership is about context, not control.
