92% of the world’s online population use emojis. So which are the most popular?

According to data from the Unicode Consortium, the Tears of Joy emoji sits at the top, accounting for over 5% of all emoji use. The only other emoji that comes close is the Red Heart.

People stick to their favorites—there are 3,663 emojis, yet the top 100 comprise 82% of total shares.

The top ten emojis of 2021 were:

  1. face with tears of joy

  2. red heart

  3. rolling on the floor laughing

  4. thumbs up

  5. loudly crying face

  6. folded hands

  7. face blowing a kiss

  8. smiling face with hearts

  9. smiling face with heart-eyes

  10. smiling face with smiling eyes
