U.S. Board Gender Diversity Trends
A “board of directors” refers to a group of people who jointly supervise the activities of an organization. The Russell 3000 index tracks the performance of the 3,000 largest U.S.-traded stocks; we can see trends in board representation by looking at the Russell 3000 over time.
As of Q1 2020, 93% of Russell 3000 boards include a woman.
Women represented 19% of boards in 2019, compared to 9% in 2008.
45% of new board members elected in 2019 were women.
The chart drawn shows the trend for women’s board representation for S&P 500 and Russell 3000 companies. The S&P 500 is an index that measures the stock performance of 500 large U.S. companies.
