An invention appreciated 200 years later
The inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg, died in 1468, indebted to creditors who impounded his presses. In court records from the time, his press is described as “a faster writing machine.”
Francis Bacon—father of the scientific method—described the printing press as one of the "Three Great Inventions" that have altered the face and state of the world, along with gunpowder and the nautical compass.
Sometimes it takes two centuries for society to adapt to a useful innovation. In this case, the literacy rates needed to increase by children learning how to read before the true power of the printing press was unleashed to the world.
