The Passion Economy

The “creator stack” allows anyone to monetize unique skills. Users can now build audiences at scale and turn their passions into livelihoods, whether playing video games or producing video content. New digital platforms, such as the select few listed below, enable people to earn a livelihood in a way that highlights their individuality.

Cameo: allows celebrities to send personalized video messages to fans. (including Jeff Barr)

Substack: provides publishing, payment, analytics, and design infrastructure to support subscription newsletters. (including Fact of the Day 1)

Only Fans: content creators can earn money from users who subscribe to their content—the "fans". Popular with sex workers, physical fitness experts, and musicians.

Patreon: allows artists to receive funding directly from their fans, or patrons, on a recurring basis or per work of art.

Twitch: a live streaming platform for streamers and fans to connect and form communities.
