How influencers make their money

A recent survey of 2,000 US influencers uncovers just how content creators make money on social media.

Over 77% of creators depend primarily on brand sponsorship deals, three times as much as every other revenue stream combined. Typically these partnerships have the influencer recommend a product/service to their social media audience, primarily on Instagram (and they must disclose their affiliation).

However, influencers want to decrease this heavy financial reliance on brand deals. A separate survey found that 80% of influencers feel they need to diversify their revenue streams.

Influencers’ Highest Revenue Sources, 2021

1. Brand deals: 77.3%

2. Ad Share Revenue: 5.4%

3. I’m Not Making Revenue Yet: 4.8%

4. Started My Own Brand: 4.6%

5. Affiliate Links: 2.9%

6. Money Tips From Fans: 2.7%

7. Courses: 1.9%

8. Subscription Service: 0.5%
