Possessive apostrophes

Using apostrophes with possessive nouns commonly causes confusion.

Here are a few rules of thumb:

Singular nouns:
Add apostrophe + s
Ex: The writer’s desk

Plural nouns:
Add only an apostrophe
Ex: The students’ backpacks

Plural nouns that do not end in s:
Add apostrophe + s
Ex: The children’s toys

Plural proper nouns that end in s:
Add only an apostrophe
Ex: The Smiths’ vacation
