Structuring one-on-one meetings

One-on-one meetings between managers and their reports are a management tool with the power to boost a team’s success. Legendary businessman Bill Campbell devised a 1:1 meeting structure to effectively keep teams in sync.

Both manager and report pre-compile a list of five topics each wants to cover. At the beginning of the meeting, they compare line items to ensure significant overlap and reassess priorities if the lists deviate significantly.

The remainder of the meeting should be structured in four sections:

  1. Performance on job requirements: Review figures/milestones

  2. Relationships with peer groups: Discuss state of relationships

  3. Leadership: Support learning/self-actualization

  4. Innovation: Encourage proactive thinking
