Five food waste facts

  1. Up to 10% of global greenhouse gases comes from food that is produced, but not eaten.

  2. Wasting food is worse than total emissions from flying (1.9%), plastic production (3.8%), and oil extraction (3.8%), combined.

  3. Throwing away one burger wastes the same amount of water as a 90-minute shower.

  4. It takes 25 years for a head of lettuce to decompose in a landfill.

  5. Less than 10% of food is composted, while the rest is deposited in landfills. Food rotting in landfills releases dangerous amounts of methane (a greenhouse gas).
