Sabbaticals as a benefit
A sabbatical is an extended, paid time off from work that employees can spend how they wish (e.g., travel, rest, side projects). Traditionally, sabbaticals occurred every seven years, though companies usually have individualized programs. Historically reserved for academic professors, sabbaticals as a benefit are on the rise.
Basecamp founder/CTO David Heinemeier Hansson considers their paid sabbatical to be “probably our most important benefit, especially for the people who’ve been here for a very long time. It’s an excellent way to truly recharge, reconnect and reconsider work and life.”
