Tips for healthy sleep

Adequate sleep is essential for everyone; it helps boost the immune system, support weight regulation, increase mental and physical performance, and reduce stress. 

An average adult requires 7 to 8 hours of sleep, yet 30% of Americans report getting 6 or less hours of sleep a night.

Here are 10 tips for healthy sleep:

  1. Stick to a sleep schedule

  2. Sleep in a dark, cool, gadget-free bedroom

  3. Exercise daily but before the evening

  4. Avoid caffeine and nicotine

  5. Avoid alcoholic drinks before bed 

  6. Avoid large meals and beverages late at night

  7. Do not take naps after 3 pm

  8. Take a hot bath or shower before bed

  9. Get at least 30 minutes of natural sunlight per day

  10. Do not lie in bed awake—get up until you feel sleepy
