Improving User Interview Questions

A user interview is a UX research method during which a researcher asks one user questions about a topic of interest (e.g., a new feature) to learn about that topic. Unlike focus groups, user interviews are one-on-one sessions. Here are three ways to improve the questions you may ask:

Worse: How probable is it that you use “Bookmarks”?
Better: How can you use “Bookmarks”?
Learning: Avoid hypothetical questions.

Worse: Do you like this feature?
Better: How has this feature helped you in your work?
Learning: Ask open-ended questions.

Worse: Do you check the “Daily Deals” daily or once a week?
Better: How often do you check the “Daily Deals”?
Learning: Encourage the user to come up with their answer from scratch.
