What to put in an email subject line

Want to make your emails stand out in your recipient’s inbox? Use these tips developed by the U.S. military for effective and actionable email subject lines.

The subject line should tell your cohort exactly what to expect from your email. Include keywords that clearly communicate the intent of the email. The military uses keywords like ACTION, INFO, and REQUEST (yes, all in caps to attract attention). You can use keywords pertinent to your industry.

Examples of stand-out subject lines are:

ACTION: Confirm meeting time

INFO: Weekly status report

REQUEST: Vacation days

Loved this one, Danny! Had the chance to participate in Escape Velocity with new Amazon directors and VPs during my SECNAV fellowship. Shared this tip with my cohort and was humbled to see a lot of head-nodding and note taking by such accomplished leaders for such simple advice.
