Earth Overshoot Day

Earth Overshoot Day is the date when our annual demand for natural resources surpasses what the earth can provide that year.

In 2019, Earth Overshoot Day landed on July 29. This year, it fell on August 22. Scientists attribute the 9.3% year-over-year improvement to global lockdowns in response to the Coronavirus pandemic. Carbon emissions dropped nearly 15% from reduced reliance on power, transportation, aviation, and industry.

The Global Footprint Network cautions, however, that “true sustainability...can only be achieved by design, not disaster.”
