Understanding emissions reporting

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are classified and measured into three categories: Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3.

Why does this matter? Tracking different types of emissions is the first step to identify and develop ways to reduce GHG.

Defining GHG categories

Category: Scope 1
Definition:
Emissions directly from a company’s operations
Example:
Fuel burned by Amazon delivery vehicles

Category: Scope 2
Definition:
Emissions from the generation of purchased energy
Example:
Electricity used to power an Amazon fulfillment center

Category: Scope 3
Definition:
All other activities that take place beyond a company’s direct operations
Example:
The production of Amazon packaging (e.g. cardboard boxes, tape)
