I'm fortunate to live where I can keep a small urban flock (4). February - October they give 12-20 eggs per week. Chicken care is fairly easy - 10 minutes a day, a quick weekly clean, and quarterly deep clean. Bonus - they love people, are hilarious to watch, and will sit in your lap for snuggles. It's not for everybody, but it works for our family.

Backyard chickens for the win! Our flock has a fenced grassy area but get to free range often. They are fun to watch, great bug control, and provide lovely eggs. We added a few dozen quail this year and my kids adore those mini eggs for breakfast!

I started having my own backyard chickens this year, adopting 5 seasoned hens. I get brown, green and brown speckled eggs more then a dozen a week. Beyond the startup cost, its more expensive then pasture, but I do it more for a hobby then saving money. They are funny, always looking guilty like I just caught them stealing something while they run away.

I grew up with eggs from my Grandmother's chickens that roamed everywhere. The shells were hard and the yolks were such a dark yellow/orange. Pasture-raised is the closest I can find in commercial eggs plus I prefer to think I'm supporting farmers that treat their chickens humanely.

I am the boring person who will explain in too much detail how free-range and organic means nothing for the welfare of the chickens and you have to buy pasture-raised (if that's affordable for the person, of course). Since moving to the country I try to buy from local small farms when possible too!

I used to buy cage free, pasture raised for me going forward!

I buy whichever eggs are on sale or are the cheapest.
