The Ten Essentials for Hiking
Packing the Ten Essentials whenever you step into the backcountry, even on day hikes, is a good habit.
Hikers ought to prepare an item per category.
Navigation: a map, compass, or GPS device (if using a phone, bring a portable charger)
Headlamp: plus extra batteries
Sun protection: sunglasses, sun-protective clothes, and sunscreen (SPF 30)
First aid: cuts & scrapes, burn/blister care, medication, and insect repellent1
Knife: a single foldout blade or a multitool
Fire: matches or lighter
Shelter: carried at all times; can be a tent or tarp
Extra food: beyond the minimum expectation
Extra water: beyond the minimum expectation
Extra clothes: beyond the minimum expectation
The Ten Essentials list was assembled2 in the 1930s by The Mountaineers, a Seattle-based organization for climbers and outdoor adventurers, to help people be prepared for emergencies in the outdoors.
if relevant
The list has evolved to a “systems” approach rather than including individual items.
And when you're done, don't forget your tick check.

I know it seems like a superfluous thing, but you get far more serious about it when you have to pull one out of your 3 year old's armpit. Ticks are also spreading into additional areas where they were previously not an issue (thanks climate change).
